Background of the Study:
Alcohol consumption is a common social practice that, when excessive, has significant adverse health effects. In Sokoto State, patterns of alcohol consumption vary widely, ranging from moderate use to heavy, episodic drinking. Chronic excessive alcohol consumption is a well-known risk factor for liver diseases such as alcoholic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. The metabolism of alcohol generates toxic metabolites that can lead to liver inflammation, fibrosis, and eventually, irreversible liver damage (Okeke, 2023). Cultural norms and social practices in Sokoto State influence drinking behaviors, and alcohol is often consumed during social gatherings and celebrations. However, the long-term health implications of heavy alcohol use are frequently underestimated, and there is limited public awareness regarding the risks associated with alcohol-induced liver disease (Aminu, 2024).

In Sokoto State, liver disease has emerged as a significant public health concern, with alcohol consumption being one of the major contributing factors. The economic burden of liver disease is substantial, affecting not only the individuals diagnosed but also placing a strain on the healthcare system. Healthcare facilities in the region often report high rates of liver-related admissions and complications, which are compounded by delays in diagnosis and treatment. Recent research highlights the need for public health initiatives that focus on reducing harmful drinking behaviors and increasing awareness about the early signs of liver disease (Ibrahim, 2025). This study aims to investigate the relationship between alcohol consumption and liver disease in Sokoto State by examining consumption patterns, liver health indicators, and the effectiveness of current public health interventions targeting alcohol-related harm.

Statement of the Problem :
Liver disease remains a growing public health challenge in Sokoto State, largely due to excessive alcohol consumption. Despite widespread cultural acceptance of drinking, many individuals engage in heavy alcohol use without sufficient awareness of the potential long-term damage to the liver. As a result, rates of alcoholic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer are on the rise, placing a significant burden on the healthcare system and leading to increased morbidity and mortality (Umar, 2023). The lack of effective screening and early intervention strategies means that many cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, reducing the chances for successful treatment. In addition, public health campaigns regarding the dangers of alcohol consumption have not achieved the desired level of community engagement, partly due to deep-rooted social and cultural norms that valorize heavy drinking (Saleh, 2024). This disconnect between behavior and awareness suggests that existing interventions are inadequate. Without targeted strategies to reduce harmful alcohol consumption, the incidence of liver disease will continue to escalate, further straining limited healthcare resources in Sokoto State.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess alcohol consumption patterns in Sokoto State.
  • To determine the association between alcohol consumption and liver disease prevalence.
  • To recommend public health interventions to reduce alcohol-related liver disease.

Research Questions:

  • What are the prevalent patterns of alcohol consumption in Sokoto State?
  • How does alcohol consumption correlate with liver disease incidence?
  • What strategies can effectively reduce harmful alcohol consumption?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Higher levels of alcohol consumption are significantly associated with increased liver disease prevalence.
  • H2: Heavy, episodic drinking is a major risk factor for developing liver cirrhosis.
  • H3: Targeted public health campaigns will reduce the incidence of alcohol-related liver disease.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study focuses on adult populations in urban and rural areas of Sokoto State. Limitations include reliance on self-reported alcohol consumption and challenges in establishing causality.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Alcohol Consumption: The intake of alcoholic beverages, measured in quantity and frequency.
  • Liver Disease: Disorders affecting the liver, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.
  • Heavy Drinking: Consumption of alcohol at levels that significantly increase health risks.
